For many years it was a common belief that only #2 wood lead pencils could be used on standardized school tests, grades K- College. BIC does not make wood pencils and was looking for a way to change these antiquated rules in order to bolster the sales of their mechanical pencils.
An alliance with Scantron, the nation’s leading manufacturer of standardized test forms and scanners with an 80% school penetration, grades K-12. The result was a multi-year accreditation where BIC mechanical pencils became and remains the only #2 Lead mechanical pencil certified for use on Scantron forms. In addition, BIC and Scantron continue to extend their relationship through conventions, in-school sampling, direct to teacher marketing and social networking.
